Some people go into chartering to defray some of
the costs of a boat they bought for other purposes. We did
it differently: having decided to set up Yacht Ventures we
spent a year choosing the right yacht. In the end there was
no contest: we settled on the First 47.7, and ordered
Azzurra
We have since built links with the owners of several other
First 47.7s that are equipped for charter, so for major
events like Cowes Week and the Round the Island Race we
operate two or three similar yachts.
All the yachts we use meet the safety requirements of the
Maritime and Coastguard Agency Code of Practice, and go
beyond those requirements in many respects (they have
radar, for example.)
Conceived by the famous Kiwi designer Bruce Farr, the First
47.7 is every inch a performance yacht, from her big
fractional rig to her deep fin keel. But performance
doesn’t mean you compromise on comfort. With a length
overall of 14.8m/48ft6 and a beam of 4.5m/14ft9, the First
47.7 has acres of deck space and a huge cockpit. And for
those used to the cramped accommodation of smaller, older
yachts, the real revelation comes below deck – an
exceptionally roomy saloon with headroom of over 2m/6ft6.
